Abinadab

Abinadab

Father of Ahio and Uzzah.

David returns the Ark to Jerusalem

God struck 70 men for looking upon the ark of the covenant, so the Israelites at the field of Joshua of Beth-shemesh sent it to Kiriath-jearim, to the house of Abinadab, consecrating his son Eleazar over it. (1 Samuel 6:19-7:2)

When King David arrived at the house of Abinadab to take the ark of the Covenant out of Baale-judah to Jerusalem, his sons, Ahio and Uzzah, brought it on a new cart. David and all the house of Israel were making merry before the LORD with songs, lyres, harps, tambourines, castanets, and cymbals. When they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, the oxen stumbled and Uzzah put his hand to the ark and held it, so God struck him down for his error. David was angry, and the place is called Perez-uzzah even still in the days of 2 Samuel. David had it sent to Obed-edom's house for 3 months before realizing he was missing its blessing and had it brought to Jerusalem. (2 Samuel 6)

Jesse's Son

Rejected by the LORD while Samuel was searching Jesse's sons for the next king. (1 Samuel 16:1-13)

When he was advanced in years, his oldest sons, Eliab, Abinadab, and Shammah followed Saul in battle against the Philistines, camping in the Valley of Elah against the camps between Socoh and Azekah. When David came to visit the camp, he met his brothers. He then heard Goliath's challenge and fought him. (1 Samuel 17:12-29)

When David was fleeing Saul and hid in the cave of Adullam, David's brothers and all his father's house joined him as soon as they heard about it. When 400 men gathered under David, he took Jesse and his wife to Mizpeh of Moab and left them with their king until the prophet Gad told David to return to Judah. They went into the forest of Hereth. (1 Samuel 22)

Saul's Son

Israel fled before Philistines on Mount Gilboa. Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchi-shua were killed, and Saul and his armor-bearer fell upon their own swords. The next day, the Philistines came to strip the slain and found Saul and his sons dead. They cut off Saul's head, stripped his armor, sent messengers throughout Philistia to carry news to the house of their idols and the people, and put his armor in the temple of Ashtaroth and fastened his body to the wall of Beth-shan. The people of Jabesh-gilead heard this, went all night to take the body of Saul and his sons and came to Jabesh to burn them there. Their bones were buried under the tamarisk tree in Jabesh, and they fasted 7 days.

(1 Samuel 31)
