Rejected by the LORD while Samuel was searching Jesse's sons for the next king, even though he was tall and handsome. (1 Samuel 16:1-13)
When he was advanced in years, his oldest sons, Eliab, Abinadab, and Shammah followed Saul in battle against the Philistines, camping in the Valley of Elah against the camps between Socoh and Azekah. When David came to visit the camp, he scoffed at Goliath's challenge to the army of the living God. Eliab became angry, asking David why he came down and with whom he left the sheep. He just knew David had come to see the battle. David asked him what he did, and if it wasn't but a word. They turned away from each other. (1 Samuel 17:12-29)
When David was fleeing Saul and hid in the cave of Adullam, David's brothers and all his father's house joined him as soon as they heard about it. When 400 men gathered under David, he took Jesse and his wife to Mizpeh of Moab and left them with their king until the prophet Gad told David to return to Judah. They went into the forest of Hereth. (1 Samuel 22)
