Scripture predates the physical written words of the Bible, as it is completely equated with the utterance (word) of God.
- Galatians 3:8 - And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.” So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.
- Romans 9:17 - "For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, 'For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.'"

Etymology
Greek hai graphai (the writings) or ta grammata (the Scriptures) are frequently used in the NT to denote OT documents like Matthew 21:42, "Did you never read in the Scriptures?" (en tais graphais). 2 Peter 3:16, "all his letters...also the rest of the Scriptures," (tas loipas graphas) includes Paul's letters with other Scriptures, likely the Old Testament and Gospels.
