Hebron


AKA Kiriath-arba in the land of Canaan in Abraham's day. It became the capital of Judah in King David's day.

Abram

After the Lord defined the promised land of Canaan defined to Abram and instructed him to walk its length and breadth, Abram moved his tent and came and settled by the oaks of Mamre at Hebron and built an altar. (Genesis 13)

Sarah died at Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham went in to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her. Then he bought the field of Ephron in Machpelah, which was to the east of Mamre for the fair price of 400 shekels of silver from Ephron the son of Zohar before the Hittites at the gate. He buried his wife in the cave there. (Genesis 23)

David shares Amalekite spoils with all the places where David and his men had roamed after their raid on Ziklag

David recovered the people and things of Ziklag from the band of Amalekite raiders and additional spoils. When he returned to Ziklag, he sent part of the spoil to his friends, the elders of Judah, saying, "Here is a present for you from the spoil of the enemies of the LORD." It was for those in Bethel, Ramoth of the Negeb, Jattir, Aroer, Siphmoth, Eshtemoa, Racal, the cities of the Jerahmeelites and Kenites, in Hormah, Borashan, Athach, Hebron, for all the places where David and his men had roamed. (1 Samuel 30)

Hebron becomes David's base while King of Judah

When David had time to mourn and lament Saul and Jonathan, he inquired of the LORD if he should go up to any of the cities of Judah. Being told yes, he inquired which, and the LORD said, "To Hebron." David went up with his two wives, Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail the widow of Nabal of Carmel, and his men, and lived in the towns of Hebron. The men of Judah came, and they anointed David king over the house of Judah. (2 Samuel 1-2:1-4)

Hebron was David's base. He ruled Judah from Hebron, and his military returned to Hebron after the Battle of Gibeon. (2 Samuel 2:11, 32)

All the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron to make a covenant with him and anoint him king over all Israel and Judah. (2 Samuel 5:1-5)

Absalom went to sacrifice at Hebron to build his conspiracy against David's throne. While offering the sacrifice, he sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David's counselor. He convinced King David to give him leave to go to Hebron by telling him he had made a vow to the LORD. (2 Samuel 15)

Pool of Hebron

King David ordered the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, to be hanged beside the pool at Hebron for killing righteous Ish-bosheth in his own home. (2 Samuel 4:9-12)
