The Lord told Abram to go to a country that He will show him, so Abram traveled through Canaan. On that journey, he went through the hill country on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east and built an altar and called upon the name of the Lord. (Genesis 12) Abram called upon the name of the Lord again at that altar when he returned. (Genesis 13:4)
