Kittim


One of the many -ims in the Bible.

Genesis

From these the coastland peoples spread in their lands, each with his own language, by their clans, in their nations. - Genesis 10:5

A descendant of Japheth. The Kittim were probably a people, not a person.

Daniel

For ships of Kittim shall come against him, and he shall be afraid and withdraw, and shall turn back and be enraged and take action against the holy covenant. - Daniel 11:30

The term Kittim is used prophetically, and most scholars identify the Kittim with the Romans.

New Testament period

In the Dead Sea Scrolls' commentary of Habakkuk, the enemies of God's people are described as the Kittim. Originally, that word denoted Cyprus but later came to be more generally the Greek islands and eastern Mediterranean coasts.
