History

Clay tablets with Sumerian cuneiform dating to about 1750 B.C. were recovered by the University of Pennsylvania excavation at Nippur (Iraq, ancient Mesopotamia).

By the middle of the 2nd millennium B.C., the Canaanites at Ugarit had simplified cuneiform script into a true alphabet of just 30 single letters
