Parchment

Writing Surface

Nearly synonymous with vellum. Parchment made from calfskin or parchment of a higher quality is sometimes distinguished as vellum.

It was made from a prepared animal skin or membrane.

They were used for writing or for printing on, to produce single pages, scrolls, codices, and books.

Compared to papyrus, vellum has significantly higher durability in moist climates. It is also smooth and durable. There are great variations depending on preparation and skin quality, though.

Modern "paper vellum" is made from synthetic plant material, but its usage and quality are similar. It's used for tracing, technical drawings, plans, and blueprints.
