The northern portion of the earth of ancient Greece was Hyperborea, inhabited by the Hyperboreans. A land of everlasting bliss and spring beyond the lofty mountains whose caverns were supposed to send forth the piercing blasts of the north wind. It is inaccessible by land or sea.
(Bulfinch's Mythology by Thomas Bulfinch, 1796. Page 7.)
- I come from a land in the sun-bright deep,
- Where golden gardens glow,
- Where the winds of the north, becalmed in sleep,
- Their conch shells never blow.
(Moore - "Song of a Hyperborean")
