Peshitta

Bible

The Syriac Version or Peshitta ("simple") was used by the Syriac (eastern Aramaic) church.

It may have been intended for popular consumption or avoiding explanatory glosses or other additions, but the intention behind the name is unclear. The Syro-Hexapla in use at the same time was annotated, so it may have been due to the lack of annotations.

The Peshitta's origin is also unknown. It may be a recast of an Aramaic Targum in Syriac, or it may have resulted from a need for an Old Testament in Syriac after the conversion of the leaders of Adiabene to the Jewish faith during the first century A.D.
