Ancestor of the modern book, often refers to ancient handwritten manuscript books. They came after rolls.
Instead of using paper, codices used sheets of vellum, papyrus, or other materials. The pages are stacked and secured at one end by a variety of methods analogous to modern bookbinding.
Early Christian writers and the Bible were early adopters of the codex form. The spread of the codex is often associated with the rise of Christianity.
The first extant codex is the book of Mark.
